IRCTC Online shoppingIRCTC might be the only website which will give chills to every Indian student or frequent travelers. The powerlessness of IRCTC in handling online booking of tickets is very well known. But, guess what people end up visiting nowhere else but here at irctc.co.in to ditch the long queues and get the tatkal ticket. Henceforth, IRCTC has over 2 crore registered users (double that of flipkart – India's largest online retailer). The portal gets 1.2 million daily visits and generates 180 million tractions annually (obviously, the highest in the country)!

Sighting the opportunity to capitalize on its gigantic user base, IRCTC had partnered with e-commerce retail company Yebhi and launched Shop Online Trading Pvt Ltd (SOTPL). The online IRCTC shopping mall has gone live and currently apparels, accessories, mobiles & tablets etc. are up for grabs.

The shopping website is more like a replica of yebhi.com with the IRCTC logo overhead on every page. Even the transactions are directed to pay.yebhi.com. Yebhi had won the 1000 crore project tender from the Indian Railways and will be responsible to manage the online platform.

IRCTC homepage is promoting the shopping portal right below the user login particular fields and a shop tab is also appearing at the top.

The ecommerce industry in India has been considered to be rapidly maturing after the successful raising of $200 million by Flipkart and acquiring of Redbus by Ibibo previous month. The infrastructure is continuously developing and so the penetration of internet is also increasing.

Given its gigantic user base this ecommerce IRCTC shopping portal can generate huge revenues. But, it is not really sure that the already unsatisfied and rather irritated users of IRCTC will purchase products from its online space. Nevertheless, being the largest users' portal in India, it will definitely help in making e-commerce more mainstream and acceptable in the country.
