Convocation and Valedictory Part II - The Speech
(The following is the second part of an extract from the diary, maintained pretty regularly, by St. Xavier's College, taken with this esteemed institution's exclusive permission. For all those who think buildings can't write for themselves... well you can just take this with a truck-load of salt)
She praised me for setting such high standards in the vast field of education (and the Jesuit fathers for enabling me to do so) and asked me not to rest on my laurels but to move forward till I was No. 1 not just in India but in the world. Aye aye ma'am!
She asked the students to work unceasingly and untiringly to give back to society what they had gained from their education here. She also asked them never to forget me or what they had been taught here and to always love their motherland, moving me to tears... Sniff!
She also said that she wanted me to become a University, much to the joy of everyone present, drawing thunderous applause from the audience.
Then came the bombshell. She said that our Alumni Association had a great many distinguished members among its ranks but no Associate Member. She turned to the Principal and point-blank asked him to make her an Associate Member, leaving most people stunned. But they soon recovered and started applauding her and the Principal, in good spirit, made her the first Associate Member of the Alumni Association.
So there! Now we also have the CM for an AM! How cool is that? Am I proud of myself or what!?
She inaugurated the first copy of 'The Xaverian 2012', my official magazine and held it out for the world to see and admire, much to the delight of all those present, not to mention the gushing student editors (including the blushing student coordinator on stage who was ensuring that no eyes left the stage) who had done a brilliant job in bringing out the magazine despite all the obstacles the inhabitants of
