A Democratic Hostel Union

Feb 11th 2012 02:04AM

We've all heard of the college union which is elected through a rigorous electoral process and follows a strict hierarchical system, rules of the college constitution and that of the Principal and advisors. Our college is pretty strict when it comes to the functioning of the union, and our Principal ensures a disciplined system.

It's normal to have a strict system for the college, every college practices the same. But I'm very sure our hostel will be among the rare ones to have an annoyingly active union.

There is a President, a general secretary, a treasurer, cultural coordinator, sports sec and the list goes on, its not even funny. We had a proper electoral process supervised by the warden for the elections, it bored me to death.

Now this bunch of union members roams around the corridors of the hostel in a gang with that irritating air of superiority, it almost boils my blood. They penalize people with such convenience and liberty which makes them the most hated lot.. well I guess I'm being too harsh on them because I'm always late for attendance and sign in at 7:35 instead of 7:30 in the evening (yeah, that's our curfew timing) and I illegally electric kettle kept an electric kettle in my room which they confiscated later.

Every small dispute here in this wild crazy place is settled by the union, every event is organized by them and the debating/discussing session with the union and the members is tiring, it's a mini and casual Lok Sabha, there is a lot of shouting, flattery, sarcasm thrown in the air, sometimes at each others faces. But that's how we work. We settle in the common room which is equipped with a smart plasma television and some 200 chairs and a cooler and then we shout/blame/point etc. It's fun to watch, but it gets ugly when they decide to take your case.. PHEW!
