You can call it 'Cafeteria' or call it 'The Heart of the College', the resemblance is immaculate. It is the hotspot of every college for the reason that it accommodates two very important things - food and peers. You can as well imagine every college-canteen with a tag line - "It's always better to eat out of a friend's dish than to eat alone off expensive china". K J Somaiya College of Engineering is no exception to that.
The campus of Somaiya – Vidyavihar is home to many institutes run by the Somaiya Trust and my college is one of them – KJSCE. It schools more than 2500 students and so the canteen is as busy as it can get, always. As soon as the clock ticks to 12 noon, a gust of students barge into the canteen with hands in their pockets, searching for change. When you're really hungry, the queue appears to be light years long; believe me, that happens to me, everyday. Your agony does not end there, because even after you manage to grab your dish, your chances of getting a chair are precarious; almost like winning a lottery.
In the middle of this pandemonium, you can still manage to have a good time. It might be just bumping into random friends or being robbed of your own food or sharing the same spoon with five more friends. You won't resent these things in a canteen, but at the same time, contemplating this exact situation in a restaurant is quite hard. After all, a canteen is not all about infrastructure and quality-control; it is about you having a good time with your friends. The canteen is always the most frequented place on the campus. Perhaps, something to retrospect in the future.
